Workshop on March 9 Offers Strategies for Leading Hybrid Teams

Registration is open for Duke Learning and Organization Development's online workshop

As teams with staff members who work hybrid or fully remote schedules adjust to new ways to stay connected, a Duke Learning and Organization Development (L&OD) course will provide leaders with strategies for keeping teams engaged.

Registration is open for 鈥,鈥 a three-hour online workshop on March 9 offered by L&OD, a unit in Duke Human Resources. Participants will discuss management behaviors that are critical to success in leading hybrid teams, as well as best practices for delivering on planned outcomes.

By the end of the workshop, participants will come away with ways to provide support and motivate teams to connect and collaborate using digital tools such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams.Duke Learning & Organization Development's Joy Birmingham. Photo courtesy of Joy Birmingham.

鈥淭hese are all things a good manager does anyway,鈥 said Joy Birmingham, assistant director for , a unit in Duke Human Resources, who designed and teaches the course. 鈥淚t鈥檚 just much harder to do at a distance.鈥

Birmingham created the L&OD course in 2021 as a response to the disruption the pandemic caused for managing teams from a distance. The will be the third time she has taught the class, giving supervisors practical tips to build group engagement and prevent employees from feeling disconnected.

Teri Parker de Leon, assistant dean for Employer Engagement and Business Operations in the Duke Fuqua School of Business Career Management Center, has been a supervisor at Duke since 2007.

With hybrid work arrangements, she attended the November 2021 class to learn new ways to adjust her style to best serve the nine staff members on her team who work primarily remote three days per week.Teri Parker de Leon. Photo courtesy of de Leon.

鈥淲hile I'd had experience managing people who worked remote on occasion, I didn't have the tools to manage a hybrid team,鈥  de Leon said.

For de Leon, the combination of discussion, self-assessment and best practices were helpful as she adjusts to new work arrangements as a result of the pandemic.

The course will also be offered on May 19 and July 20. To register for the March 9 session or another offering, complete the L&OD .
