This is the Mercato San Severino section of the Toarcian Ocean Anoxic Event. The quarry, which is located in southern Italy, contains limestones deposited around 183 million years ago. By measuring trace concentrations of uranium in the limestone - and specifically the ratio of naturally-occurring uranium isotopes – the research team was able to estimate the change in ocean oxygen levels through this well-known, but previously poorly quantified, ocean anoxic event.
