Modest Snow Accumulation Possible Tuesday Evening

Due to deteriorating conditions, all bus routes with the exception of the C1 and Duke Vans will be discontinued at 9 p.m. Tuesday. Duke community members should monitor for real-time updates for transit routes. The C1 and van services will continue as long as possible to ensure safe return back to campus residences.

The latest forecast indicate snow may begin closer to 6 p.m. in central North Carolina with less than an inch of accumulation expected in Durham and possible higher accumulations further east.
The 老牛影视 Marine Lab on Pivers Island is expecting to receive up to 6-inches of snow and will activate the severe weather policy for the facility from 5 p.m. Tuesday to 5 p.m. Wednesday.
Crews in Durham are pre-treating campus streets, outdoor stairways, walkways and entries to parking facilities. As a precaution, the roof level of parking garages on campus have been closed, and anyone with a medical parking permit will be allowed access to PG2 beginning at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Officials will continue to assess conditions through the evening and will send out additional information if the severe weather policy is activated for Duke鈥檚 main campus and medical facilities.

Duke officials are closely monitoring weather conditions with updated forecasts now calling for a chance of snow across the central North Carolina beginning Tuesday afternoon.
The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory beginning at 5 p.m. today. Snow flurries could begin earlier in the afternoon, but no accumulation is expected until the evening hours. Less than an inch of accumulation is expected west of Highway US 1, with possible higher accumulations to the east. Subfreezing temperatures are expected until Thursday with wind chill values of 0-10 degrees.
Duke crews are pre-treating campus streets, outdoor stairways, walkways and entries to parking facilities. Crews will be on-site ready to respond Tuesday night. As a precaution, the roof level of parking garages on campus have been closed.
"We ask everyone to monitor the conditions, which may vary depending upon location," said John Dailey, Associate Vice President for Public Safety. "Impacts are expected to be different across the region. We encourage anyone driving to allow extra time for travel and use caution as icy spots may exist."
Given the forecasts for winter weather, staff members should review the and discuss with their managers what they should do if it is activated.
During times of severe weather, some staff positions require on-site presence to continue operations. To ensure continuous operations of patient care, student support and research functions, managers should assign all jobs to one of three service categories:
- Essential Service: During severe weather or emergency conditions, essential service staff report or remain at work. Transportation service and childcare services may be provided for those required to work during severe weather or emergency conditions.
- Reserve Service: During severe weather or emergency conditions, these staff are assigned a status at the time of the event.
- Delayed Service: During severe weather or emergency conditions, these staff do not report to or remain at work.
