David Smithwick Named Associate Vice Provost for Human Resources
Senior HR leader has 14 years of prior service at Duke

David Smithwick will be the senior human resources leader for the Provost鈥檚 Management Center.
David Smithwick is Duke鈥檚 new associate vice provost for human resources, announced Vice Provost for Finance and Administration Dave Bowersox. Smithwick began in his role on Jan. 13.
The appointment marks a return to Duke for Smithwick, who began his Duke career in 2008 as chief human resources officer of the Duke Clinical Research Institute. In 2013, he was named Duke鈥檚 assistant vice president for human resources for rewards and recognition.
Smithwick succeeds Kimberley Harris, who will retire on Jan. 31 after 46 years of service to Duke.
Smithwick, who has more than 30 years of human resources (HR) experience, was most recently the executive director for compensation and classification at Auburn University in Alabama.
In his new role, Smithwick serves as the senior HR leader for the Provost's Management Center, overseeing HR support for more than 6,000 faculty and staff across Duke鈥檚 schools and academic units. He is responsible for developing and implementing HR policies and practices that align with Duke's commitment to its workforce. He will lead the development and implementation of an approach to HR support, oversight and professional development that embraces Duke鈥檚 commitment to its employees and their careers.
Smithwick will collaborate with Duke central human resources and HR leaders across the university to develop user-friendly processes and policies that balance the needs of employees with sound business practices and regulatory requirements.

Prior to 2008, Smithwick held HR leadership positions at Diamond Healthcare Corporation in Richmond; Magellan Health Services in Atlanta; and Texaco Inc. (now Chevron Corporation) in White Plains, New York.
Smithwick holds a bachelor鈥檚 degree in psychology from the University of Lynchburg and a master鈥檚 degree in industrial psychology from Long Island University.
