Three Tips on Keeping the Holiday Family Dinner Table Civil and Thankful
John Rose, a visiting scholar at Duke鈥檚 Kenan Institute for Ethics where he served as associate director of the Civil Discourse Project, has advice on how to manage hard conversations. He focuses on three tips that might be helpful for meetings of extended families this Thanksgiving.
Tip 1: Assume goodwill on the part of your discussion partners. 鈥淒on't attribute bad motives to others that they don't claim to have,鈥 Rose said. 鈥淚t shuts down conversation.鈥
Tip 2: Avoid embarrassing your discussion partners. 鈥淵ou don鈥檛 persuade people by shaming them.鈥
Tip 3: Acknowledge your own moral and intellectual failings. 鈥淪o often it鈥檚 pride that prevents healthy conversations,鈥 Rose said.
