It's a sobering statistic, but according to CNN, there have been "at least 50 school shootings in the United States so far this year, as of September 19.”

That is why Duke officials encourage all members of the community to review the guidelines and watch the video about how to respond in the event of an armed intruder.

“We had a sad reminder just last year with the shooting on UNC’s campus how devasting such incidents are,” said John Dailey, Associate Vice President for Public Safety & Emergency Management. “While we hope such events never happen on our campus, it is best to know beforehand what you should do.”

At 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, Duke will test its DukeALERT emergency mass notification system and use the opportunity to build awareness about what to do in the event of an armed intruder.

During the test of the , all students, staff and faculty will receive a test email and a text message will be sent to the mobile devices of all students, staff and faculty who have . Messages will also appear on Duke websites and Duke’s information line (919) 684-INFO will provide a recorded message with updates during the test.

The outdoor warning system for Duke’s campus will also be activated during the test. The siren’s tone is considered an “all hazards” alert used to encourage community members to take shelter immediately.

offers advice on during a range of scenarios, including armed intruder, severe weather, hazmat scenarios, and utility failures that involve power, water, steam or sewer disruptions.

During the Oct. 9 test, community members enrolled in , the free mobile safety app available for and devices, will also receive a test message.
