, who graduated from Duke in 1956 and earned her Ph.D. here in 1966, is a renowned marine biologist, oceanographer and activist. She delivered the keynote speech at the student-organized on Sept. 13.
鈥淭he ocean is still鈥攄espite all that we have put into it and have taken out of it鈥攊t's still the greatest wilderness on the planet," she said. "We鈥檝e been really complacent about what we put into the sea and really complacent about what we take out of the ocean. It has to change. We have the best chance there will ever be to protect the habitability of Earth by protecting the deep sea.鈥
