Committee to Review State of Academic Freedom, Responsibility, Free Expression and Engagement at Duke

鈥淭he work of this committee is critically important as the issues under consideration go to the heart of the university enterprise,鈥 said Trina Jones, chair of the Academic Council and Jerome M. Culp Distinguished Professor of Law. 鈥淭he Executive Committee of the Academic Council, on behalf of the Academic Council, is pleased to partner with the president and provost on such an important endeavor.鈥 

鈥淎lmost 60 years have passed since Duke鈥檚 commitment to academic freedom was enshrined in the faculty handbook,鈥 said Provost Alec D. Gallimore. 鈥淎cademic freedom is fundamental to a university鈥檚 core missions of research, teaching and service, and this is an appropriate time to reflect on and examine Duke鈥檚 commitment and related issues of free expression and engagement. I am grateful to my colleagues for agreeing to embark on this great service to Duke.鈥

The committee will work throughout this academic year, engaging with a broad range of individuals and groups in the Duke community, and expects to submit a report to the Academic Council, which will be shared with the provost and the president in the spring of 2025.
