Safety is rarely far from the mind of Tammy Sorrell, Duke Health鈥檚 Engineering & Operations Department Human Resources Director.

Her unit includes the workers who tend to the mechanical and infrastructure needs of Duke鈥檚 sprawling medical campus. Reviewing the paperwork involved with injuries from workplace accidents is part of her job.

鈥淎nyone can be injured with a slip and fall, but our team members are working with electricity, plumbing, welding, HVAC and those sorts of things, so the opportunity for injury is exponentially increased for our team members,鈥 Sorrell said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 really important for everybody to have safety at the top of their minds.鈥

During the month of June, which the National Safety Council designates as , you can boost your awareness of workplace risks with a developed by Duke鈥檚 Workers鈥 Compensation office in Human Resources and the Occupational & Environmental Safety Office (OESO).

Everyone who completes the quiz 鈥 regardless of how many correct answers they get 鈥 can enter their name in a drawing to receive one of 10 boxes of a dozen cookies from .

Last June, Sorrell was one of the roughly 700 people to complete the safety quiz. At the end of the month, hers was one of the 10 names drawn in the raffle for the cookies.

鈥淭he cookies were awesome,鈥 said Sorrell, who shared the cookies with her family. 鈥淏ut increasing our safety awareness is really what this is all about.鈥

The questions cover common best practices for a safe workplace and procedural questions about what Duke staff and faculty should do in case of a workplace injury.

鈥淲e have people that work in all different types of jobs at Duke with all different types of hazards, so we made the questions applicable to our employees no matter what kind of work they鈥檙e in,鈥 said Nicole Greeson, Associate Director of OESO.  鈥淲e want to get people thinking about safety during National Safety Month when they might not otherwise be thinking about it on a routine basis.鈥

In data released in December of 2023, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that there were recorded in the U.S. in 2022, up 5.7% from the previous year. The National Safety Council reported that the were exposure to harmful substances or environments, overexertion of bodily reaction and slips, trips and falls.

鈥淭his quiz is an easy way to refresh your understanding of what you can do to keep your area safe,鈥 said Chip Kyles, Director of Workers鈥 Compensation for Duke Human Resources. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 our focus. We want everybody engaged because each employee has the opportunity to address the risks in their own environment, because they know it best.鈥
