From Farm to Campus: Tasty Finds at the Duke Farmers Market

Visit the Duke Farmers Market every Thursday for fresh, local produce and goods

The day before Duke Farmers Market opened for the 2024 season, David Duckett was as giddy as a child waiting for Santa Claus.

He noted that the market opened at 11 a.m. and set out the canvas bags he鈥檇 need for the day so he wouldn鈥檛 forget them.

And at 10:50 a.m. on April 25, he found his wife, Hannah, a fellow registered nurse in the neuroscience stepdown unit, and announced it was time: He was heading down to the Farmers Market.

鈥淚 quite literally planned my day around it,鈥 David Duckett said between nibbles of a purchase from , one of more than a dozen at the market, which runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Thursday until Oct. 10 on the Duke Medicine Pavilion Greenway. A bonus fall 鈥淗ol鈥橝HH鈥檇ay鈥 market is planned for Oct. 31.

Along with the empanadas, the Ducketts snagged a pint of strawberries and a selection of oyster mushrooms from , which is in its third year as a Duke Farmers Market vendor.

The Ducketts had never tried oyster mushrooms before. Their plans for preparing them were not yet formed.

鈥淲e鈥檙e going to have to look up some recipes because I鈥檝e never had an oyster mushroom that I know of,鈥 David Duckett said.

Clarence DuBois, co-owner of Gabor Farms, had some ideas. As he told another customer, they could simply saut茅 the mushrooms with a little garlic. But he cautioned that the stems had to be sauteed a little longer because 鈥渢hey鈥檙e a little bit tougher.鈥

That kind of personal interaction is what keeps DuBois coming back with Gabor Farms, which specializes in mushrooms of all varieties.

鈥淚 really love the energy,鈥 DuBois said. 鈥淚 see the same faces 鈥 the same nurses, doctors, aides 鈥 and just for them to say, 鈥楬ey, I'm glad you came back,鈥 means a lot.鈥

Brian Zelanko, Health Promotion Manager for , Duke鈥檚 employee wellness program, likes that vendors like Gabor Farms 鈥渙ffer fruits and veggies that are delicious, healthy and local.鈥

Megan Griffin can vouch for the delicious part. She was standing in line at the stand when she couldn鈥檛 help but take a bite of one of the strawberries from the pint she was about to buy.

 鈥淭hey鈥檙e really good; really sweet,鈥 she said.

鈥淵ou can tell just by looking at them, it鈥檚 totally different than what you鈥檇 get in the grocery store,鈥 colleague Jeannie Sparks added.

Both Clinical Research Coordinators for the Duke BioRepository & Precision Pathology Center stop by the Duke Farmers Market whenever they鈥檙e available during market hours. This time, colleagues Emily Shaheen and Parker Shoaf accompanied them, and they all scooped up some of the strawberries that sweetly scented the air.

鈥淭hey鈥檙e not going to make it home,鈥 Griffin said, laughing, as she continued snacking on the strawberry.

鈥淚 think I鈥檓 going to change and get a bigger basket so that I can bring some home,鈥 Sparks said.
