The Brodie Recreation Center will reopen Monday, June 17, after three months of renovations, cleaning and testing.
The center was closed on April 1 out of an abundance of caution after lead dust contamination was detected during renovations. Following the closure, certified lead risk assessors conducted surface sampling and evaluations, including a lead-based and lead-containing paint survey and risk assessment. State-certified contractors renovated, repaired, painted and cleaned the facility, and all areas were sampled to ensure the decontamination efforts were successful.
While Brodie was closed, Duke did additional work to refresh the center by painting ceilings and trusses, resurfacing some flooring, and cleaning all surfaces and equipment as well as the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system.
Subsequent testing of surfaces at the center found Brodie is safe to reopen to the public. The pool area will remain closed and isolated from the remainder of the building while the original construction project continues, with proper protections in place for all staff and visitors to the facility.
鈥淲e鈥檙e excited to be reopening Brodie for the Duke community,鈥 said Matthew Stiegel, Ph.D., director of Duke鈥檚 Occupational and Environmental Safety Office. 鈥淲e鈥檙e committed to providing a safe environment and will continue to review our policies and procedures to maintain that safe environment for everyone at Duke.鈥
