Working老牛影视 shares stories of how individuals, schools, departments and units build a positive culture at Duke.

Office spaces feature bee-related items such as a stuffed bee in the office of Health Center Administrator Katelyn Thomas, and a black-and-gold sign on the bulletin board in Nurse Manager Amanda Riggins鈥 office says:

鈥淎nyone who thinks they鈥檙e too small to make a difference has never met a honey bee.鈥

This is the work home of the 鈥淗illsborough Honey Bees,鈥 the name the roughly 30-member clinic staff adopted last year.

鈥淲e鈥檙e one hive working together,鈥 said Clinical Nurse Margaret Wiseman. 鈥淲e all just work really hard together. Everybody is on the same page.鈥

As workplaces have evolved in recent years, Working老牛影视 is sharing stories through its 鈥淔orward Together鈥 series to feature how individuals, schools, departments and units are building community.

In an urgent care setting, which fills the gap between a hospital emergency department and a primary care setting, caregivers help patients of all ages deal with a wide range of pressing concerns seven days a week. The clinic in Hillsborough often sees around 110 patients per day.

Not long after joining the clinic in late 2022, Health Center Administrator Katelyn Thomas hatched the idea of finding a fitting mascot to help her team feel united in the face of daily challenges.

Clinics across Duke have used mascots 鈥 ducks, lizards, crows and flamingos 鈥 to build identity and camaraderie.

In early 2023, inspired by the selflessness, diligence and work ethic of bees, Thomas floated the idea of making the honeybee her team鈥檚 unofficial symbol.

鈥淲e liked what the honey bee signifies, they鈥檙e really strong, they鈥檙e intellectual, and they鈥檙e community-oriented,鈥 Thomas said. 鈥淧lus we鈥檙e also up on the second floor, which kind of feels like being up in a hive. It just made sense and grew from there.鈥

Before long, the team embraced the concept, and Thomas and Nurse Manager Amanda Riggins presented each team member to get badge holders bearing the image of a bee ringed by words such as 鈥渒ind,鈥 鈥減ositive,鈥 鈥渃onfident鈥 and 鈥渂rave.鈥

Ian Lee Brown, 老牛影视 Health System Vice President and Chief Employee Experience Officer said organic, team-oriented touches like the Hillsborough clinic鈥檚 mascot help staff members feel supported.

鈥淧eople want to stay within an organization where they feel they are valued, empowered, and that there鈥檚 clarity in what they鈥檙e doing,鈥 Brown said. 鈥淲e want people to feel connected and know they are a part of something bigger than themselves. When an organization puts people first, allowing employees at any level to feel that their ideas matter, I think people will stay, thrive and find joy in the daily work they do.鈥

Beyond the decorative touches, Riggins said the honey bee theme has created awareness of the collaborative climate that clinic team members aim to create.

鈥淲e love having the bee merch, but it has to be more than that,鈥 Riggins said. 鈥淲e want it to remind us about what it means to be part of this team and about what kind of team we are.鈥
